Wondering what the fight for civil liberties looks like during a pandemic? Well you’re in luck! ACLU-SDIC is putting on a 5-part webinar series called #FlattenTheCurveOfInequality where local advocates will share the work they’ve been doing to support families and communities during this crisis.

For each webinar in the series, we will highlight the challenges the COVID-19 pandemic presents in relation to specific civil rights issues including housing justice, economic justice, police accountability and education. Join us to learn what campaigns ACLU-SDIC and our partners are working on to support impacted communities during this crisis and how you can help us #FlattenTheCurveOfInequality.

Education Equity in the Age of COVID-19 webinar Thursday, July 2 at 6pm with Spanish and ASL interpretation. Featuring Warsan Atan, Youth Will; Melissa DeLeon, ACLU of San Diego & Imperial Counties; Nyaduoth Gatkuoth, Defund School Police San Diego; Amir Whitaker, ACLU of Southern California; and Dr. J. Luke Wood, San Diego State University. Join us as we take a closer look at how COVID-19 has exacerbated the inequities within our education system. Community organizaters and education advocates will discuss the challenges of distance learning, youth mental health needs, as well as issues impacting students with disabilities and English language learners.


Part 5: Education Equity in the Age of COVID-19 – Thursday, July 2, 6 p.m.-7:30 p.m.

COVID-19 has exacerbated preexisting inequities in our education system and presented new barriers for students. Join us as community organizers and education advocates discuss the needs of students in regard to distance learning, youth mental health, special education and more.

Part 1: Advancing Racial Justice & Equity during COVID-19 – Thursday, June 4, 6 p.m.-7:30 p.m.

Elected leaders and community advocates will discuss how this global pandemic has exposed deep-rooted racial and health inequities in our society. Join us to learn about local efforts to ensure equity is centered in our county’s response to COVID-19. Elected leaders from the City of San Diego and La Mesa will highlight their cities’ efforts during this crisis, while advocates from the South Bay and San Diego will talk about how community members have been organizing to respond to this pandemic. Join us for this informative discussion and find out how you can get involved in efforts in San Diego and Imperial County to advocate for an equitable response to this crisis.

Decarceration as a response to COVID-19 featuring Laila Aziz, Program Director, Pillars of the Community; Chelsey Birgisdottir, Policy Associate, ACLU-SDIC; Esmeralda Flores, Immigrant Rights and Binational Affairs Advocate, ACLU-SDIC; and Dinora Reyna, Executive Director, San Diego Organizing Project. Moderated by Adrienna Wong, Senior Staff Attorney, ACLU of Southern California.

Part 2: Decarceration as a Response to COVID-19 – Thursday, June 11, 6 p.m.-7:30 p.m. Join us for a conversation with community advocates on how this global pandemic has exposed the dangers of mass incarceration. Learn about local efforts to release people from jails and detention centers, as well as advocacy to address biased policing practices.

Making Ends Meet During Covid-19 webinar featuring Savana Doudar, ACLU-SDIC; Christina Griffin, We All We Got San Diego; Paola Martinez, Center on Policy Initiatives; and Jody Vakili, Legal Aid Society of San Diego, Inc. Moderated by David Trujillo, ACLU-SDIC. No one should have to choose between providing for their family or protecting their own health and that of their loved ones. Join us for a conversation on how COVID-19 has exacerbated longstanding inequities in our region. Learn about efforts to provide families with much-needed economic protections and about actions you can take to make our region a more equitable place to live.

Part 3: Making Ends Meet during COVID-19 – Thursday, June 18, 6 p.m.-7:30 p.m.

This pandemic has made it clear that the inequities that have existed for generations are amplified during times of crisis. It is critical that our elected officials center equity, fairness and racial justice in their response. No one should have to choose between endangering their health or the health of others or providing food and a roof for their family. Join us for a discussion on the economic and housing protections that working families in our region need and how we can fight for them.

Support for Individuals Experiencing Homelessness featuring Eve Garrow, ACLU SoCal; Jonathan Markovitz, ACLU of San Diego and Imperial Counties; and Mitchelle Woodson, Think Dignity. Moderated by Savana Doudar, ACLU of San Diego & Imperial Counties. Join us for a discussion about the impact of COVID-19 on people experiencing homelessness and the need to advocate for the safety and security of our unhoused community. Learn what the role of government is in providing permanent solutions and how community organizations and advocates are pushing for the decriminalization of homelessness.

Part 4: Support for Individuals Experiencing Homelessness –

Thursday, June 25, 6 p.m.-7:30 p.m.
Join us for a conversation on the challenges COVID-19 presents to individuals experiencing homelessness in our region. Alongside community organizations and advocates, we will be addressing the responses and resources needed to promote the safety and security of individuals experiencing homelessness: the decriminalization of homelessness, increase in non-congregate forms of shelter, increase in resources.
